General Requirements

APPLICATION. The Film Studies Graduate Program application deadline for the 2008/2009 academic year is December 31, 2007. Obtain applications by e-mail to info@film.utah.edu or by calling the Film Division at (801) 581-5127 . Address requests by mail to Darci Berg, Division of Film Studies, University of Utah, 375 S 1530 E RM 257b, Salt Lake City, UT 84112-0380.

ADMISSION. Admission requirements include a cumulative average of 3.0 ("B") for either the entire undergraduate transcript or the final two years of study and three letters of recommendation. Applicants for the MFA in Film must submit a film or video project, a sample of critical writing, three letters of recommendation, a brief statement of purpose and undergraduate transcripts. Other creative work--such as slides--may be submitted if you wish.

RESIDENCY. Film programs are conceived as requiring three (3) years of study. A minimum of four (4) semesters of residency is required.

CREDIT. Within four (4) years of beginning a program, University requirements for the MFA degree specify 52 credit hours must be completed. The Division requires between 52 and 70 credit hours beyond the Bachelor's Degree depending on the student's program, prior education and experience. Transferred graduate hours up to 8 credit hours taken on a non-matriculated basis prior to acceptance into the program may be counted toward the degree with the consent of the Division Head and the Director of Graduate Study.

CONTINUING MINIMUM REGISTRATION. Students must register for at least three credit hours per semester during the academic year from the time they commence their studies within the Division until graduation.

ACADEMIC STANDARD. Students will be placed on probation if they do not maintain a cumulative "B" average (3.0 GPA). Students placed on probation must achieve a "B" average (3.0 GPA) by the end of the second semester there following. Students failing to do so will be dropped from the Division.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE. There is no language requirement for an MFA degree in Film.

TIMETABLE. All timetables and requirements of the College of Fine Arts and the Graduate School will apply to students in the Division of Film's MFA program.

DIVISION WRITTEN COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION. All MFA students must pass a written comprehensive examination covering their respective fields. The Area Heads are responsible for setting up these examinations. The Student's Committee will administer and evaluate the results.

ORAL EXAMINATION. The ORAL EXAMINATION is administered and evaluated by the faculty of the Division during the semester in which the student anticipates graduation and may not be administered until all required and written work has been completed (Written Comprehensive Examination, Graduate Project Evaluations, College of Fine Arts forms, etc.), and until all course work has been completed, with the exception of those courses in which the student is currently enrolled. Incompletes from previous courses preclude administration of the ORAL EXAMINATION.

CREATIVE PROJECTS. All MFA students must complete three CREATIVE PROJECTS in Film. Credit hours for CREATIVE PROJECTS range from 3 to 8 and are determined by the student's MFA Committee. The student is responsible for establishing a Committee Chair and, with the advise of that Chair and the Director of Graduate Studies, forming a Committee.
