Prof. Hubbel Palmer’s film ‘Ninety-Five Senses’ nominated for Humanitas Prize

A new short film co-written by Film & Media Arts Department professor Hubbel Palmer was nominated for a Humanitas Prize, the organization announced last week. According to its mission statement, the Humanitas Institute “honors and empowers film and television writers whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way.”

‘Ninety-Five Senses’ is an animated short film cowritten by Palmer and his writing partner Chris Bowman. It was directed by Jared Hess and Jerusha Hess, and features the voice acting of Tim Blake Nelson. Six different teams of animators worked on the film, each using its own style to illustrate the final regrets and redemption of a death-row inmate (Nelson). The film has been selected in over 20 film festivals, so far garnering six awards.

In its category for the prize, ‘Ninety-Five Senses’ was the only animated film to be nominated this year, as well as the only animated short ever nominated that wasn’t produced by either Pixar or Disney.

In solidarity with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Humanitas will not be hosting its usual awards ceremony.

Congratulations, Prof. Palmer, for this amazing achievement!
