Born in Taiwan, Lien Fan Shen received her Ph. D. in Art Education at The Ohio State University, 2007. Shen earned her MFA in Computer Art from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and a B.S. in Land Economics and Urban Policy at the National Cheng-Chi University, Taiwan. Shen taught computer art and Japanese animation courses at The Ohio State University, and was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Ball State University, Indiana. Currently, Shen is appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Film Studies at the University of Utah. Her courses include Computer Animation I, Computer Animation II, Animation Projects, Film Theory, Anime History and Perspectives, Educational Theory and Practice for Film Studies, and Creating Comics and Manga.
Shen published five comics in Taiwan: Let’s Fall in Love (1996), I’ll be Your Paradise 1-2 (1997-1998), Clair de Lune 1-2 (2000-2001). Clair de Lune was selected in the Golden Caldron Awards by the Government Information Office and awarded The Best Romantic Comic in Taiwan, 2002. Her animation work The Buddha won several international awards, and Reconstruction was exhibited in Taiwan Avant-Garde Documenta, Taipei, and SIGGRAPH Art Gallery 2002, San Antonio. Shen’s research papers about Japanese anime and computer animation were presented in SIGGRAPH 2007, San Diego, Media in Transition 5 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, CLIFF 2007 at the University of Michigan. Her recent collaborated work, Thaw (2008), is a combination of dance performance and animated images.
