Graduate Requirements
The requirements for graduation will generally consist of a portfolio of work, which may include a 16 mm film and a selection of high-end video pieces. The M.F.A. is a three year program. The M.F.A. program’s emphasis is on studio film/video productions, although students are required to take an equal number of classes in film history and criticism. In addition to the studio portfolio, a written evaluation of the major M.F.A. project will be required and a video copy of the candidate’s work must be deposited with the Film Division. An M.F.A. comprehensive examination is Film History must be successfully completed. This examination will generally be taken upon completion of formal course work toward the M.F.A.
The application deadline for consideration of admission to the M.F.A. Program is December 31 of the year preceding the Fall semester in which study is to begin.
Please note, however, that the deadline for receipt of application materials by the Graduate Admissions Office is November 28, 2008.
In addition to the Film Studies Division application and three letters of recommendation, you must submit:
*A reel of your own work in film or video indicative of your personal creative approach to
the medium. (DVD)
*A sample of critical writing (from any discipline) is also required, as the M.F.A. Program
includes courses in film history and criticism.
*A letter of personal intent explaining why you want to go to film school and what you
hope to accomplish during your studies here.
We are interested in your ideas about filmmaking and how you express yourself in writing.
Please call Darci Berg at 801.581.5127 if you have questions about this program. We look forward to receiving your application.
