PRODUCTION COURSE ADMISSION POLICY

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Film Studies is a broad-based undergraduate course of study. It differs from a “studio degree” like a Bachelor of Fine Arts in that the BA emphasizes academic achievement above practical application. While undergraduate Film Studies majors are regularly admitted into advanced production courses, the only required course for completion of the degree is Film Production I (FILM 3710).

Admission into courses higher than Film Production I is a privilege the Division is pleased to be able to offer selected undergraduate students. Currently, high demand combined with limited resources makes it impossible to accommodate everyone who requests admission.

The Division of Film Studies welcomes students from other major courses of study and strives to accommodate them when class space permits.

Film Studies offers three tiers of production courses:

Level I – Introductory video production:

  • Film Production I (FILM 3710) - All Semesters

Level II – Professional video production:

(prerequisite course: FILM 3710)

  • Documentary Video Production (FILM 6370) – Fall Semester
  • Cinematography (FILM 6660) - Fall Semester
  • Directing (FILM 6480) – Spring Semester
  • Videography (FILM 6490) – Spring Semester

Level III – 16mm film/24P video production:

(prerequisite course: FILM 6370, FILM 6660, FILM 6480, or FILM 6490)

  • Advanced Film Production (FILM 6610/6620) – 1 year (Fall & Spring Semesters)
  • Advanced Post Production (FILM 6630) – varies
(prerequisite Advanced Film Production II - FILM 6620)

Eligibility for admission into Level II and III courses is based on the following criteria:

  1. Performance in Film 3710 (grade of B+ or higher, attendance, class participation, etc.).
  2. Performance in any other Film Studies courses (including history, survey, and criticism courses).
  3. Assessment of past creative work and evaluation of future potential.
  4. Successful history of handling production equipment.
  5. Declared major and class standing.
