Undergraduate Program

This program offers students the opportunity to examine closely the art form that defines our time through a series of courses covering the history, aesthetics, and criticism of the motion picture. Significant experience in film and video production is also a required element of the program. Cinema from around the world - narrative, documentary, experimental, and animation - form the core of the course of study. These texts offer penetrating insights into human behavior, cultural change, and the relationship between past and present.

Undergraduate film/video studies at the University of Utah is designed to develop the student's critical thinking skills, broaden understanding of visual literacy, and foster award-winning creative work.

Undergraduate Requirements

The major requires a minimum of 44 hours of Film Studies courses. This includes 16 core hours plus 28 elective credits of film history and production. In addition, the B.A. degree requires 16 hours of language or a demonstration of language proficiency. There is a requirement of 15 Allied hours; courses that relate to the major, yet are not a part of the curriculum, i.e., photography, art history, communication, or other fine arts courses. There is also the University Liberal Education requirements of core and distribution courses that total 36 hours. Finally, the student will need an additional 15 hours of electives to graduate with a minimum of 126 hours. Further, a minimum of 2.5 GPA must be maintained to graduate in Film Studies.
